Many college campuses are expanding their support for LGBTQ+ communities by providing Safe Zone training for students, staff, and faculty; creating more LGBTQ+ student organizations; increasing gender-neutral restrooms and housing options on campus; and offering courses and majors focused on LGBTQ+ studies. But you don’t have to be a big organization like a college to make a difference. If you’re wondering how you can be a supportive ally, here are a few ways you can take action right now.

  • Read books by LGBTQ+ authors: The queer experience is often over-sensationalized and glamorized, so it’s important to read books that provide accurate and honest portrayals of their stories. Additionally, most queer authors are usually not as highly publicized in mainstream literature. By supporting their work, you elevate their voices. Check out this list of books by LGBTQ+ authors for some great choices.
  • Post messages in support of LGBTQ+ issues on social media: Social media is an excellent way to share messages and expressions of support. Posts with hashtags like #istandwithtranspeople; #lovewillalwayswin; #isupportqueerrights; and more demonstrate your affinity and support for the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Contact your elected officials about LGBTQ+ legislation: Recent legislation has attempted to limit the freedoms of the queer community. In fact, state lawmakers have proposed a record 400+ bills that limit LGBTQ+ rights so far in 2023 alone, including banning access to gender-affirming health care for transgender youth. If you’re of voting age, contact your local elected officials to voice your opposition to anti-LGBTQ legislation today.

You can also be a supportive ally by helping your LGBTQ+ peers find and access important resources, including lists like the Top 50 LGBTQ-Friendly Colleges and Universities to help them learn more about welcoming campuses.
